Dorset Creative Census

Monday, January 14th, 2013

What is this Dorset Creative Census and how does it relate to me?

Were you aware that there are over 300 creative agencies operating across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole?  Don’t worry if you didn’t know that, as not a many people do.  But we think more people should know.  That is why we’re carrying out the census and that is why your contribution is important.

There are many award-winning businesses based here and even more quietly producing effective solutions for their clients.  Advertising, digital and design agencies; PR, events and filmmakers; illustrators, games developers and social media specialists – they’re all based here in Dorset but not enough people know about them.

The more we all know, the more we can all talk authoritatively about the state if our local industry and the more other people will sit up and take notice.   That’s what this census is trying to achieve.

Twelve months ago, in the dim and distant past that was January 2012, the first survey of creative agencies across the county was launched.  It was a simple, uncomplicated affair – just six questions emailed to 150 businesses – the results of which were interpreted by a talented group of final year undergraduate graphic designers and a wonderful infographic was produced.

This image caught the eye of the universities and the local authorities, as well as national institutions such as: Design Council, Creative England, Skillset, Design Business Association, Institute of Practioners in Advertising, creativebrief, the Recommended Agency Register and others too.  No other town or city in the UK is doing anything like this.

But it only featured 100 companies and so it only told part of the story.

This year we want to feature as many businesses as possible and we want to tell a fuller story.

As a community if we want to see our sector grow, if we want to attract and keep great talent and we want the businesses based here recognized further afield, then we have to start telling people about it.  And we can’t start telling people about it, until we know what it is.  That is where the census comes in and that is why any and all contributions are important.

Using the data that we’re gathering, the intention is to once again produce a useful graphical representation of the creative economy sector across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole.  We’ll be able to show the age, sector, size and location of a wide variety of service providers.  This will include advertising and marketing agencies, PR and social media consultants, videographers, film makers and web designers, etc and it’s important that this information be as comprehensive and complete as possible.

The finished article will then be freely distributed and we will ensure that it ends up in the hands of as many of the most relevant and influential people in the area as possible.  This will include:
- Prominent business people in the area;
- The Chief Executives and Economic Development Officers of the Local Authorities;
- The Universities;
- Local press and business publications; and
- The Chambers of Commerce and business networking groups;
- As well as national organisations such as Creative England, Design Council IPA, DBA, etc…

Hopefully you can understand how useful this could be and how important it is that yours and as many businesses like yours are featured.  So please, if you can, take the time to give me your contribution – it really shouldn’t take you any longer than 2 minutes.

Just click here to be taken to the survey and I promise to treat anything you provide with the utmost discretion.

The Amazeball and a 2012 Retrospective

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Last week, Bournemouth’s fine dining establishment The Print Room played host to Meetdraw’s 16th social event: The Amazeball.  Thanks to our generous sponsors, Rubicon People, 130 attendees enjoyed a brilliant night of great food, great company and great music.  And thanks in part to Mr & Mrs Christmas showing up (you can see the photos here), the hashtag for the night, #meetdrawamazeball, reached an astonishing 18,000 accounts and enjoyed 108,000 page impressions too.  Not bad for a little old social event in Bournemouth, but then 2012 has been quite a year for the talented folk who make up the creative economy of Bournemouth (and Dorset and Poole).

For a start not only were Redweb named by eConsultancy the Most Innovative Agency for the second year running, but the good folk of 4T2 Multimedia were awarded the overall Grand Prix prize at the prestigious New Media Age awards.  Two excellent agencies recognized by their peers as leaders in their sector and headquartered in Bournemouth.  Rather like the ever-expanding Thinking Juice who also enjoyed a spectacular 2012, culminating in their enigmatic MD Gellan Watt being voted Marketing Agency MD of the Year by MiNetwork.

But 2012 hasn’t all been about awards, although both Createful and Strawberry Soup winning Lovie’s, Revolting winning a Media Innovation Award and 3 Sided Cube winning Best Mobile App at the Digital Communications Awards at a ceremony in Germany shouldn’t be ignored.  Along the way, some terrific work has been produced too.

For instance Make Studio’s campaign work for Garmin has shown what a collaborative approach can produce when the partners all trust one another; the fine tailored folk at Folk continued to produce some beautiful sites, including one for Gieves and Hawkes of 1 Saville Row, London and the National Trust Touring Treehouse that Mad River produced was a brilliantly executed piece of exhibition design.

And of course special mention should once again go to 3 Sided Cube who, although everyone would agree that the circumstances behind why this happened were regrettable but an act of God and unavoidable, had the No1 downloaded app in the US AppStore.  There’s no doubt that their innovative work helped save lives.

On a brighter note, no retrospective look at 2012 would be complete without mention of the Olympics and our little piece of the Jurassic Coast played its part.  Not only was Weymouth the only non-London venue to host an event everyday, but it also played host to a series of high-profile industry-focused seminars, including a Bright Blue Day sponsored creative industries day and an exhibition of 21 award-winning Dorset-based agencies.

And speaking of events, Silicon Beach 2012 firmly secured its place alongside the likes of Thinking Digital and Like Minds on the national creative conference circuit.  Over two days in October, 160 attendees saw the likes of Paul Bainsfair (Director General of the IPA), Syd Lawrence (Founder of We Make Awesome Sh), Nick Darken (Creative Director of Albion), Nicole Yershon (Director of Innovative Solutions at Ogilvy), Andy Bell (Creative Director of Mint Digital) and 13 others wax lyrical about digital innovation.  Over the course of the event 2500 tweets featuring the official hashtag were sent, reaching 200,000 accounts and enjoying 1.5million page impressions.  One point five million.  That is the definition of a successful event.

So all in all, 2012 was a great year for the 150+ agencies that make up the creative economy of Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole.  But what does 2013 have in store?

Meetdraw needs YOU

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

With 14 successful events under its belt, you could say that Meetdraw is now about to enter into its potentially difficult adolescent phase.  And like any other teenager, it perhaps thinks it knows it all.  But also like any other teenager, there’s a wealth of experience out there that it could learn from if it had the sense to ask.

And so it’s asking.

In a display of maturity that over-confident teenagers are normally bereft of, Meetdraw is asking for your opinion – if you have a spare two minutes, please give it: http://bit.ly/meetdrawsurvey

One of the underlying principles of Meetdraw has always been about supporting the community and so as that community, what do YOU want?  Is there stuff that you particularly like, or things that really irritate you?  Do you find yourself thinking you’d do it differently, and if so how?  Are there any particular activities you would like to see happen?

The 12 Butchers who organize the various Meetdraw events are all volunteers; they all give their time freely.  But that doesn’t mean they can become complacent.  YOU have the opportunity to help shape the future of Meetdraw, please take two minutes to complete this short survey: http://bit.ly/meetdrawsurvey

2011: a year of Twestivals, Pool Parties, full fat Conferences and the Meetball

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

So another year rolls by and Meetdraw goes from strength to strength.

We started the year in a period of transition, the founding Butchers were ready to stand down and we needed to pass the running onto a new team of Butchers.

Having worked incredibly hard and been very successful in creating Meetdraw it was time for the guys to stand back and earn a well deserved rest.

So in quarter one we assembled a team of new Butchers from across the digital spectrum to guide Meetdraw forward.

Fantastic Free Events

It has been an exciting year with three regular quarterly Meetdraw evening events, all free and each with a different theme and venue.

First we were the Dorset link for Twestival back in March at 1812 Cocktail Bar.

Then to celebrate summer we went to the Cumberland Hotel for a Beach and Pool Party.

For the end of summer/back to school event we tied in with Silicon Beach Conference and went to Aruba for free beer in the sunshine.

The Fabulous Finalle

Our forth event we took a risk and went big organising The Lonely Christmas Turkey at The Print Room. For this event we took a risk and asked our supporters to pay in return for a more formal evening with drinks, dinner, raffle and entertainment provided.

All events have proved successful with in excess of 100 attendees – our finale at The Print Room attracted over a 120 paying guests – our tweet board, over 330 tweets that went out to an audience of over 12,000 and we generated a large number of hangovers!

We’ve achieved a lot in or 3rd year

For the first time this year we also leant our brand to Silicon Beech and teamed up to hold the first ever digital conference in Bournemouth – which was an amazing success – with some excellent speakers, great venue and lovely cupcakes.

So what have we achieved:-

-        Successfully passed on the running of Meetdraw to a new team of Butchers

-        Ran our four quarterly events very successfully

-        Supported a Digital Conference attracting huge publicity and interest in and out of the Region

-        And hopefully connected and entertained a large number of digital enthusiasts in Dorset

All this is built around our core principles of building, supporting and connecting the digital creative industries in Dorset.

2012 – Better than ever in our 4th year?

So what for 2012 – well probably more of the same with some differences! Last year we have evolved the formula and tried some new things – this coming year we will adopt the best of 2011 and continue to try new things. And we will listen to feedback and criticism and provide you with the sort of organisation you want offering the events and services you enjoy and like.

We also want to help connect members of the herd with jobs at good local agencies, so we’ve launched the #meetjobs page check it out and let us know your thoughts.

As you are no doubt aware Meetdraw is a not for profit organisation and everyone who helps make it happen does it for fun and no material rewards. So a big thank you to the Butchers and everyone who has helped make it possible in 2011 – from you the members, through to the sponsors, venues and companies that have lent time and resource to making it happen.

A great opportunity for Meetdraw’ers…

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Later this year (October 6th), Bournemouth will be the proud host of an exciting conference exploring the impact of digital innovations on the publishing industry and an opportunity exists NEXT WEEK to get involved now.

The conference is a collaboration between Cyprus Well (www.cypruswell.com), Media Futures (www.mediafuturesconference.com), the Creative Industries iNet (www.creativeindustriesi.net) and Bournemouth Borough Council.  More details will be forthcoming over the coming weeks but on 14th May a one-day Book Hack Day is taking place at the Free Word Centre in London and a limited number of spaces have been reserved for SW-based businesses.  Not only that, to support South West businesses (and yes Bournemouth IS in the South West) to take part in this event, Cyprus Well, supported by the Creative Industries iNet and South West Screen are offering up to £50 towards the cost of travel for five attendees.

Book Hackday is an event which will help innovate the form of the book.  ebook apps are scratching the surface of what both books and technology are capable of.  What if you could develop something that represents the next step in the evolution of the book?

The event is the first to bring together designers and developers with publishing professionals, under a shared and united agenda: to co-create something that takes books forward.

The structure of Book Hackday offers something for everyone with sessions covering the development of new ideas, along with ‘lightning talks’ from key thinkers and do-ers.  It will be a thought-provoking day that will conclude with prototypes that demonstrate the potential book futures concepts and the results from Book Hackday will be showcased at the Conference in October.

Get involved

Send your name, business and email address by Tuesday 10 May to tguiry@cypruswell.org and you will be put down for one of the reserved places for South West businesses and individuals, subject to availability.

This is a great opportunity for Meetdraw attendees to get involved in what promises to be high-profile and innovative conference that could have a game-changing impact on an industry in turmoil.  Plus you’ll get to network with some truly innovative ‘folk in the smoke’.
